April Favorites 2016

Another month has come and gone yet again.  It feels like the older I get the more time speeds up and I’m not sure I like that too much!  Aye, but what can you do?

My favorites this month are listed below:

Kat Von D Shade + Light Eye Contour Palette:  This all matte palette features three color quads in neutral, cool, and warm shades which flatters every skintone.  These shadows are a velvety powder that easily blends and builds to create gorgeous and versatile looks.  They are highly-pigmented and long-wearing.  The palette comes with three base shades in Laetus (creamy nude), Lazarus (cool taupe), Ludwin (peachy bronze).  Three contour shades in Samael (dusty fawn), Saleos (smoky brown), Succubus (rich rust).  Three definer shades in Solas (espresso brown), Shax (jet black), Sytry (chocolate brown) and three highlight shades in Lucius (soft beige), Liberatus (pinkish ivory), Latinus (golden bisque).  If you’re in search of an all matte natural palette then I highly recommend splurging on this one.  This palette has actually been out for a while, I was just late to the ball game on trying it out for myself.  I wish I had sooner!

Quick Tip Tuesday: How To Tell If You’re Warm Or Cool Toned

A quick way to figure out if you have warm or cool undertones is to press your thumb against your inner forearm for a few seconds.  Once you take your thumb away you’ll see your true undertone before the blood rushes back in.  If you catch a flash of yellow, you’re warm toned.  If you see pink then you are cool toned.  This can help you in picking out the right makeup for your skin tone.

Six Closet Staples We Have Thanks To Coco Chanel

Coco Chanel was probably the greatest fashion designer that ever lived.  She liberated women from the restraints of corseted silhouette clothing post WW1 era and went against tradition wearing clothing like a man.  She took the simplicity of men’s clothing and created the modern casual woman with a feminine touch.

If it weren’t for Coco we wouldn’t have these six staples in our closet:

1.  The Little Black Dress aka “LBD”:  Women used to wear black for mourning purposes prior to the 1920’s but in 1926 she published a picture of a simple, calf-length black dress in American Vogue.  The “LBD” became accessible for women of all classes and a simple closet staple.

Boxycharm Reveal: April 2016

This month’s theme is “Cloudy with a Chance of Charms.”

(Subscribe to your box here)

This month’s box was worth $106.90.  Products included:

  • Pur-lisse Lip Comfort:  Made with Mango and Shea Butters, Jojoba and Rice Bran Oils and Vitamin E for hydrating the lips.   I personally did not like the taste of this product.   It feels good on the lips (petroleum free) and actually soaks into the skin versus sitting on top but I can’t get past the taste!  It claims to have no taste but to me I taste really stale orange peel or something.  I’m probably the only person that has this issue.  Otherwise I think it would be a great product for dry chapped lips.
  • Blinc Cosmetics Lash Primer in black:  I thought…”FINALLY AN EYE LASH PRIMER IN BLACK!”  I always complain about lash primer being white.  I want my lashes as dark as possible and I love primer because it makes them fuller and longer, but I always feel like I’m counteracting the mascara because it’s usually white.  I was thrilled to try this out, however this brand made my lashes look like spider legs.  Needless to say it was a flop.
  • Anderson Lilley Hand Cream:  I did not open this because I want to add it to a new collection for another giveaway.  Plus I have so many hand creams and lotions I don’t NEED anymore.
  • Your Minerals Eyeshadows:  Same as above.  I didn’t open this because I don’t need it and I want someone else to have it.  🙂  It’s a really pretty bronze color though!
  • OFRA Long Lasting Liquid Lipstick in Honolulu:  This was my favorite item of this month’s box.  I’ve been dying to try an OFRA lipstick and the color is beautiful.  It is very dark and vampy  so this would be a good color for fall and winter.  They are long lasting and don’t bleed into the skin and they are super creamy and soft.  This one dried to a matte finish.  I am interested in trying more colors.

Have you tried these?  If so what are your thoughts and which colors do you recommend?

Quick Tip Tuesday: Use Sulfate-Free Shampoo

When choosing a shampoo, try picking out a sulfate-free shampoo.  Using shampoo with sulfates (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) can be damaging to the hair follicle and irritating to the skin and scalp.  It can strip your hair from it’s natural oils causing breakage and it can also strip that hair color you paid generously for in the salon.

Five benefits of using Sulfate-Free shampoo:

  1. It increases moisture retention in the hair.
  2. Helps hold hair’s natural moisture and oils.
  3. It is less irritating to the scalp and mild enough for sensitive skin.
  4. Helps keep color to dyed hair for longer periods of time.
  5. Protects the scalp from harmful chemicals.  Sulfate can actually be absorbed into the body through the scalp.  Studies show that Sulfate can be absorbed by the liver which could mimic the behavior of estrogen possibly causing hormonal issues in the body.

Throwback Thursday- Favorite Red Lip

As most of you know, the blog has had a recent facelift and has come quite a long way since I started it last June.  If you’ve been a faithful follower since the beginning then you probably have noticed the changes in the layout, picture quality, etc.  Today I wanted to reflect on that and throw it back to one of my first posts, which happens to still be one of my favorites.  I hope you re-enjoy the post as well!

Original Post:

My Favorite Red Lip

I typically wear a lot of nude and neutral lip glosses and lip sticks on my lips.  Every now and again I like to switch things up and rock a bold lip color.  My favorite bold lip is a bright red gloss and pencil by MAC.  I use the Cherry Lip Pencil mixed with the Longwear Lipglass Driven By Love.  The colors mix very well together.   They are absolutely gorgeous!  GORGEOUS!!!

Get the look:   MAC Cherry Lip Pencil    —   MAC Lipglass Driven By Love

The Lip Liner has a very creamy texture which glides on or fills in very easily. (Almost too easy, so you want to be careful and not color outside of the lines if you catch my drift.) I have used it by itself before.  I just applied some clear gloss or chapstick on top of it and called it a day.  However, I prefer pairing it with the Lipglass.  It just gives it that extra oomph!  It’s so smooth, creates lots of shine and is long lasting.

How I achieve the Perfect Red Lip:

  1. I pat my lips with a little foundation, BB cream or powder (whatever I’m using that day) to create a primer.
  2. I like to line my lips with a full line vs a thin. It just seems to work better for me.  I feel like it holds the color longer.  Also I create an X on the Cupid’s Lip to help create a more precise line.
  3. Then I apply the Longwear Lipglass and touch up the outer rims of my lip with my beauty blender to smooth out any of the color bleeding. (I still color outside the lines sometimes….oops)

Do you have a favorite red or bold color?  Let me know what you like to wear.

[BONUS TIP:  A natural eye with a slight winged liner is a good contrast with a bold lip]

Dry Shampoo Hacks

Dry shampoo is an excellent product for refreshing your locks in between shampoos and a healthier alternative for daily washing.  For me, it’s the best thing since sliced bread.  I’m not going to lie, I loathe washing my hair and I probably rely on dry shampoo more than the average person.  I used to wash my hair daily but noticed it was ruining my ends, so I switched to every other day until I started using dry shampoo.  Now, I may wash my hair twice at week, and have noticed a huge difference in the health.  But, did you know there are other ways to use dry shampoo other than keeping hair looking clean and refreshed?  Here are a ten other uses for dry shampoo:

  1. Adds body to limp hair.  Simply spray onto the roots and through your strands and wait a few minutes to let the powder absorb some of the oil.  Then lightly tousle your hair with your fingers.
  2. You could also use it after showering for added volume.  When hair is about 85% dry, spray through the ends and finish styling as normal.
  3. Instead of hairspray, try dry shampoo in the place of.  It’s great for creating loose curls.  The dry shampoo will help separate the curls and make it look more piece-y.  This is especially great if you accidentally give yourself Nellie Oleson curls.  Spray on the curls and tousle with fingers to break it up.
  4. Dry shampoo is great for adding texture to hair for styling.  Especially if the hair is squeaky clean and you are trying to do an up do or braids.  This helps give your hair a matte, non-slip texture.
  5. If you have blonde hair and you’ve gone too long between color touchups, a good trick is to spray in the scalp area to conceal your roots a little.
  6. Try using it at night to absorb oil and sweat as you sleep.  You will wake up with extra texture and body.  For even more volume braid your hair or wrap in a loose bun before bed.  This is also a great hack for dark hair, because the white powder film will absorb over night.  (FYI…they do make dry shampoo for dark hair)
  7. If you apply too much oil, shine or sheen products to the hair and make it too greasy, you can counteract it with the dry shampoo.  It will help absorb some of the products.
  8. Spray dry shampoo on bobby pins to prevent them from slipping in the hair.  (Hair spray would work too)
  9. Colorless dry shampoo can be used to pre-treat oil stains from clothing or carpet.  Spray trouble spot and let it absorb for 20-30 min before rinsing.
  10. Stinky shoes?  Spray dry shampoo in them and let them sit overnight.  In the morning they will smell more refreshed.

Don’t have dry shampoo?  A cheap alternative would be to use baby powder.  It has the same oil absorbing affects as dry shampoo.

DIY dry shampoo:  Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to 1/4 c. of cornstarch.  Apply to the roots of your hair and comb through ends.

Radiant, Natural Prom Makeup Tutorial

Prom season is here and I am seeing a lot of prom makeup requests coming through so I thought, “Why not? Let’s do a tutorial.” This post is sort of humorous to me, considering my prom was 16-17 years ago.  I also can’t believe I just admitted that to y’all…sigh.  Prom is a very impressionable time in one’s life and hopefully one of the fondest memories you will carry with you. Funnily enough outside my wonderful group of friends, the thing I remember most about my prom was the getting ready part.  Then six years later, when it was time for my little sister’s prom, I was right in the middle of getting her and her friends ready.  Naturally those would be my favorite memories considering how passionate I am about makeup/hair.  Those of you that are headed off to your prom, I hope you have a safe and wonderful time.

[My Senior Prom – 2000]

Today I’m going to show you an easy step-by-step radiant, natural prom makeup tutorial.  This is a classic-elegant look that could also be used for any special occasion or wedding.
